I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY by Janine Allen

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.

I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.

I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today.

Editor-in-Chief Checks In

So, I'm sniffin around for a story and Mom comes to me with a real zinger (get a load of this!) an interview with Clark Gable! I'm not sure, but, isn't he gone with the wind?!? Not so fast, turns out he's alive (and well-finally). Weird part about it, he's a cat! Me, alpha canine, interviews a feline---will wonders never cease? Here's his story.

"Meow hello. I was a street cat in Novato, California. Not exactly a movie star existence, let me tell ya! I ended up in a shelter, and what a treat--two square meals, fresh water and attention all day long from an awesome bunch of volunteers. Yeh, I was in a cage, but at least I was safe. I'd been there a couple of months when these people come walking by my cage and there was just something about them like they were looking for me. I wanted to make sure they saw me, so I gave them a high five and the rest is history.

My name now is Davidson. I'm named after the most awesome motorcycle in the world (Dad says). Even though I'm permanently attired in a tuxedo (check out the white bowtie and spats), I'm tough & street wise just like a Harley. And heads up Harley- Davidson- I'd look quite the boss in a pair of chaps! (Hint, hint- donations accepted!)

These days, well I'm living like a king, thanks to the kindness of a stranger I now call Dad. 411 to all you felines who think the street rules NOT! I get fish flakes-yeh, check it out! I gotta yard full of so many birds I never know which window to go to! And all you people who think you can't have a pet cuz you don't have a yard for a dog-GET A CAT!! If I do say so myself, I'm a constant source of amusement, affection and companionship. I'm totally low maintenance and can even take care of myself for a whole day as long as you leave me food, water and a clean box. (check out the scientific advances in litter!)

Thanks Benji for letting me tell my story. And thanks to all of you who cared enough to read this."

*********

WOW! That Davidson has quite a tale. I may have to reconsider this feline friendship thing! Until next time,
